Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is an embarrassing condition which affects everyone at some point in their life. While most people often notice it when they eat certain foods such as onions, garlic, or fish; bad breath can be a result of many medical conditions. Most people who suffer from bad breath turn to temporary solutions to their problem which includes the use of mouth washes or breath mints.

The key to eliminating your bad breath begins with good oral hygiene.

What Causes Bad Breath?

The true culprit which causes bad breath is bacteria which accumulates in your mouth throughout the day. Halitosis is a common indicator of poor oral health, with conditions ranging from tooth decay to gum diseases such as gingivitis. Other health conditions such as diabetes or acid reflux have also been found to cause bad breath. Chronic dry mouth is another common contributor to bad breath because saliva helps kill and regulate the bacteria in your mouth. Make a point of drinking water instead of sugary drinks which feed bacteria throughout the day to keep your mouth moist.

It is important to follow a strict routine of practicing proper oral hygiene to combat and prevent bad breath. Learning how to thoroughly and properly brush your teeth, properly flossing, and using a mouthwash to kill the bacteria in your mouth which isn’t eliminated by brushing and flossing will help get rid of your bad breath. Always visit your dentist every six months for routine checkups, and to discuss any concerns you have that involve bad breath or your oral health.
